How to Change Your Samsung® Refrigerator Water Filter
by Dr. Jonathan Doyle - Updated April 19, 2022
Samsung® refrigerator water filters, like most water filters out there, have expiry dates. You have to change them at some point, and getting it right is the only way to get safe, clean, and healthy water. Most Samsung® refrigerators have filter light indicators, ensuring you know when your water filter is due for a replacement.
Where Is the Water Filter on the Samsung® Refrigerator?
Start by identifying the model of your Samsung® fridge – this will guide your water filter purchase and ensure you get the right replacement filter.
Samsung® refrigerators have their water filters in different places – it all depends on your model.
- For instance, the French Doors and Four Flex models have their water filters somewhere in-between the produce drawers on the French door fresh food section.
- Alternatively, if you have a side-by-side Samsung® refrigerator, your water filter will most likely be on the fresh food side, to the right of the bottom drawer.
How Can You Know the Model Number of Your Samsung® Refrigerator?
Samsung®’s water filter part number for most French doors, side-by-side, and four flex refrigerators from Samsung® is DA29-000020B. However, we recommend checking the correct filter for your product using the model number.
You can identify a Samsung® refrigerator model and serial number by looking out for the first alphabet of the model number. Often, it is “R” except in built-in Chef Series models where it is “BR.” You will most likely see the model number of your Samsung® fridge somewhere around the bottom left side. Another place to check is the inside top frame wall of the fridge.

When Should You Change Your Samsung® Refrigerator Water Filter?
When the Samsung® refrigerator water filter displays a green or blue hue, you can expect an excellent performance. Note that this may differ slightly, depending on your filter’s model.
A water filter that has served for five months or delivered 450 gallons of water will display a light pink or orange indicator. The refrigerator indicator will turn red once it reaches 500 gallons of filtered water or six months of filtration. The color change indicates it’s time for a filter change.
It is best to change the filter as soon as there is a color change – this ensures harmful impurities do not find their way into your drinking water.
How to Install the Samsung® Refrigerator Internal Water Filter?
You can follow the steps below to install the water filter in your refrigerator;
- Identify where the water filter is in your fridge.
- If your refrigerator filter has a protective lid, lift it and turn it counter-clockwise. You may find it difficult to raise the cover if the built-up pressure is much. In that case, dispense some water to reduce the pressure before pulling again.
- Detach the new filter from the packaging and remove the protective cap.
- Push the detached filter into place.
- Once in place, turn it clockwise and look out for the lock symbol to align with the arrow.
- If there is a filter lid, replace it.
- Test the performance of the newly-installed filter by running several liters of water. This will flush out the air in the line and prevent future leaks.
- Reset your refrigerator’s filter light.
How to Install the Samsung® Refrigerator External Water Filter?
These steps will guide you in installing an external water filter in your Samsung® refrigerator;
- Look for the isolation valve in the refrigerator; it is usually around the water supply line. Turn it off.
- You need to depressurize the system by drawing a large glass of water from the fridge’s water outlet.
- With a bucket and towel handy, press the locking collar at the end of the old filter with your thumbnail while pulling out the water supply line. This should remove the old filter. Hold down the locking collar with your finger or a strong-edged object if the hose is not sliding out.
- Ensure the plastic tube is cut straight with no jagged edges. You can do this with a Stanley knife or any other sharp object. This is necessary to prevent leaks from the tube.
- Next is to install the rinsed new filter. Rinse the filter by holding it under a running tap or sink or submerging it into a bucket of water. Rinsing is necessary for a few reasons – it gets rid of any loose carbon and activates the carbon block for efficient filtration performance.
- Insert the new filter approx. 5-10mm until it sits in place, with the inlet side corresponding with the flow direction.
- Have the filter in the bucket and turn on the water until five liters of water flow through the filter into the bucket. With the water supply off, now connect the line that feeds into the fridge.
- Turn on the water supply and allow about two liters of water to run through the system.
- Set up the replacement date sticker. It is best to have it in an open place in the refrigerator door.
- Finally, reset your refrigerator’s filter light.
Should You Turn Water off to Change Your Samsung® Refrigerator Filter?
If your Samsung® fridge has an internal filter, an auto shut-off valve can keep the water shut when swapping out the filter. Otherwise, do not manually shut off your water supply to avoid common installation issues like airlocks and others. When turning the water supply back on, the water either splutters or refuses to come out at all.
If your Samsung® fridge has external filters, we recommend shutting off the water supply before swapping filters. Such refrigerators will have an inline filter without any auto shut-off valve. Instead, only a tubing at either end links directly to the water mains. Therefore, shutting off the water supply during filter swaps prevents flooding from this connection.
